Have You Ever Eaten Sushi?

Sushi always comes with wasabi and ginger, sometimes it comes with Daikon or Shiso leaves.

Nigiri sushi is a raw fish on top of the sushi rice. It always comes in one piece so you can put all of it in your mouth at one time.

Sashimi is only raw fish, served sliced, no rice at all. It is often served with daikon and/or shiso. This is my favorite style as you really get the flavor of the fish. Plus, it’s a great way to enjoy sushi.

Temaki-sushi is also called a hand-roll. This is a cone shaped sushi. It has fish and vegetables wrapped in seaweed. You do not have to use chopsticks to eat this, just use your hands.

Chirashi Sushi is a big bowl of sushi rice with the various of raw fish on top of the sushi rice. This is often a nice selection as you can choose to eat your fish as sushi or sashimi.

Maki Sushi is rice, fish, and vegetables combine together and wrapped with seaweed or soy paper. The roll is usually cut into six to eight pieces, depending on the thickness of the roll.
There are also more specific terms for the rolls depending on the style:

Futomaki is a roll that has lots of vegetables and it does not contain fish at all. This roll is very big.

Uramaki is a roll with the rice on the outside instead of the seaweed. I like this kind of roll better because I love to eat rice.

Hosomaki is a small roll with rice on the inside and seaweed on the outside. It usually comes with 6 pieces.

Japanese people like to eat sushi without soy sauce and American like to eat sushi with lots of sauces plus the soy sauce.
As you can see from the left, those rolls are Japanese style. They only put 1 ingredient in each roll. It’s very simple and they do not put any soy sauce.

This is the Chicago Spring roll from one restaurant in Chicago. It has shrimp tempura, avocado, cream cheese, tobiko, masago, chili sauce, wasabi mayo, green onions, and sweet soy sauce. As you can see Americans like lots of sauces with their sushi.
Sushi is an excellent way of enjoying healthy food that comes with various benefits and it’s definitely better than eating hamburgers or pizzas.
